The ocean breeze whipped through Ethan's hair as he sat on the pier, watching the waves crash against the rocks. The setting sun painted the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple. He took a deep breath, the salty air filling his lungs. He hadn’t felt this unburdened in what felt like forever.

He saw her then, standing near the end of the pier, gazing out at the horizon. It was Chloe, his childhood friend, the girl who collected seashells with him. The wind carried her laughter.

He started to walk towards her, the words "Chloe!" already forming on his lips. She turned, her eyes met his. She smiled. A polite, pleasant smile. But it was also… blank. The words dissolved on his tongue, his steps faltering. He found himself rooted to the spot, suddenly chilled to the bone.
